EVANTHUIS ROOM
Evanthuis, a hackney sire, was imported by Kosie de Wet from the United Kingdom in 1913. He earned his reputation as hackney champion in Britain and America where he won first prize three times at the London Hackney show and in New York Carriage show. He went on to win many titles in South Africa, including that of Rosebank’s Champion Stallion. The Excelsior Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has been named after this much loved horse.

HUSSEIN ROOM
One of Excelsior’s champion stallions, Hussein won the Metropolitan and the Durban July in 1927, and narrowly missed the ‘Triple Crown’ by coming second in the Gold Cup.

SAN LOUIS ROOM
San Louis was born and bred at Excelsior. On the cusp of being put down he was given a second chance at life and was lovingly nursed back to health. He went on to win four races and to qualify for the Guineas. In 1981 San Louis won the prestigious 1600m Richelieu Guineas. The Excelsior Reserve Shiraz is also named after this much loved horse.

COUNTRY COUSIN ROOM
Country Cousin was one of Excelsior’s finest racehorses. Her endurance carried her through three seasons during which she won 10 races, including two victories in the Cape of Good Hope Paddock ‘weight-for-age’ stakes and the Western Province Nursery Cup in 1960.

ALLURE ROOM
Allure was one of Excelsior’s champion mares and made her spectacular debut in July 1986 when she won at Newmarket. Shortly after she had two successive victories over 1000m at Turffontein, including the Gencor Champion Sprint (Fillies and Mares) where she broke the race record. She went on to win the Mike’s Kitchen Fillies Guineas at Gosforth Park where she broke the race record previously held by Enchanted Garden.

AGRICOLA ROOM
Bred at Excelsior by the current owner’s mother/ grandmother, Margaret de Wet, this champion bay colt won the 1,000 guinea Frank Connock Gold Cup and the Yearling Championship at Milner Park in Johannesburg. Margaret made history in 1964 as the first woman breeder to win the 1,000 guinea Frank Connock Gold Cup.

GONDOLIER ROOM
Bred at Excelsior, Gondolier was awarded the title of ‘Three-Year-Old Colt of the Year’ in 1982/83 after winning both the Sigma Classic at Germiston and the South African Two Thousand at Greyville. In 1985, six months after receiving extensive physiotherapy on his hind leg he went on to win the Rothmans July Handicap, South Africa’s most prestigious race held in Durban. The Excelsior Reserve Merlot is named after this legendary horse.
